Gramma Grimaldi's Danish Apple Pastry

2-1/2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 cup shortening
1 egg (separated)
2/3 cup milk
6-8 apples
3/4 - 1 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
3 tbsp. flour
1 cup crushed corn flakes
1 cup confectionery sugar
3-4 tsp milk
2 drops almond extract
  • combine flour, salt & cut in shortening
  • beat egg yolk & add milk to make 2/3 cup
  • add this liquid to flour mixture to make dough - then divide in half.
  • roll 1/2 dough (with flour) to fit 15x10 jelly roll pan - lay dough in bottom of pan
  • sprinkle crushed corn flakes on crust
  • lay apple mixture on flakes & dot with butter/margarine all over apples
  • add top crust layer, seal edges and cut slits in top
  • beat egg white & brush on top crust
  • bake in 375 degree oven for 45 minutes
  • cool on wire rack
  • drizzle on topping in lattice or cris-cross lines
  • cut into squares and serve
