Book Bingo!

The patterns are being bingoed! There some appliqué patterns, but most of them are red work. Anyone interested in red work should check out Book Bingo on June 3rd. I am also putting some older video tapes in the bingo pile. Most of the tapes have not gone out in seven years! Nevertheless, these might be of interest to beginning quilters. We have a lot of good books, but many are not going out—so I am sending some to the bingo pile. As always, donations are welcome; what the library doesn’t need we will bingo.
For those new to Book Bingo, the bingo sheets have a bunch of quilt related words which you fill in the squares with. Then, when I call out a word, you put an X in that box. The center box has a free X. A row of Xs wins you your choice of book (or pattern or tape). Bingo is a fun way to move what is free anyway and you could get something neat!

Doll and Animal workshop

Everyone knows or knew that April 29th was the Doll/Animal workshop. How come there were only 9 members that attended? It was very disappointing to see so few there. We all know this is a guild project that we do for the area hospitals & we should all participate.
Although we had this workshop in Hall at the church there, most members know where this is. If you weren't sure of the location, call someone that does. I can't stress enough what these dolls/animals mean to the children when they receive them. We are a quilt guild that works together supposedly but this certainly wasn't very represented by the members.

Quilt Show

Quilt Show 2010

As most of you know, the meeting notes have been posted. There are errors in the notes.

Barb Shamp did not make the motion, Ellen Buckley did, Barb seconded them.

The motion was made, and a discussion did follow. Our President called a halt to the discussions when BOTH sides were just repeating themselves. As everyone knows, we could still be there discussant it!

I was up front and I did not see 26 not voting. Our President stopped counting @ 47 as it was over half needed for the vote to carry.

8 people objected not 6.

As you can tell, this is a "hot button issue"….I think that all the newer members need to know that we have been at the Marcus Whitman School for about 20 years. In fact, we have never been anywhere else. This Guild was founded by people from Groham, Middlesex, Rushville and a few other towns. But mainly from the 3 mentioned. Lake to Lake Quilt Guild is known for having the show at Whitman.
In years past, the date at the end of June was good as Whitman used to have graduation before the final tests were given. When they changed graduation after the test week, it moved our show to close to July 4th weekend.

The last quilt show, only about 30 people helped, out of 130. That is a really poor showing.
I challenge those who want to move our show to somewhere else to get off their butts and work the show.
If you can’t take the time to work the show, don’t criticize the choice of venue.

QuiltBarn Trails of Ohio

A grassroots art movement to dress up old barns with paintings of family quilt partterns is snowballing . The movement was started in 2001 by Donna Sue Groes of Ohio. Donna Sue set out to honor her mother's heritage and her love of quilting by painting a sqaure of her mother's favorite quilt on their old tobacco bar. Friends volunteered to help bring the idea to reality. The community was so inspired that the idea turned to crating a trail of "quilt barns." Local farmers quickly endorsed the idea and conated space on their barns. The needed funds were raised, and soon the first of 20 different multicolored quilt patterns began appearng on Adams County, Ohio barns. The concept continues to grow. Now over 900 quilt squares grace barns in 16 different states, and more are being painted every summer. Ohio, Iowa and Kentucky have over 250 in each state. Wherever they appear, most are the result of a county initiative that combines several quilt barns to form a trail like the 105-mile route created in Adams County. Some communities hire local artists, and others are painted by clubs or high school art classes that seize the opportunity to volunteer to helpcreate public art. The reason for the rapid acceptance of the concept is the squares not only honor a farm family, they also recognize the rural heritage that has been a part of the fabric of America since Colonial times. Learn more about the movement at http://www.adamscountytravel.org/quiltbarns.html. Also visit New York State's Barn Coalition web site at http://www.barncoalition.com/.

QB's January 28th

January QB's project

You will choose a word and depict the word in fabric within a given time limit. I will be making up the words.

Material List
Scissors
Wonder under or Steam a Seam
2-3 or 4 background pieces size 8 x 10" or 9 x 12". Use fabrics without a definite print that have some movement in them. Batiks or hand dyes work well. Do not use white.
Fabric scraps-if you have fabric with the fusible already on it, bring that. Otherwise you will have to apply the fusible at QB's.
Small iron and ironing surface-extension cord

A sense of adventure.

In February we will use these same pieces and embellish them some how. If you have questions give me a call 585-554-4125

Rochester Area Fiber Artist Show

Just opened at the Arts and Cultural Art Council's Gallery on 277 North Goodman Street, Rochester NY (just behind the Memorial Art Gallery and across from the Village Gate) is an exhibit of contemporary textile works.

The group calls itself RAFA (Rochester Area Fiber Artists), and it is about 50 members that started as the "Art Quilt Group" years ago from some members of GVQC. There are lots of wonderful art quilts to see, and it is a treat to see them installed so beautifully.

Many of the works are by Lake to Lake members, like Caren Betlinski, Caris Burton, Liz Scott, Val Schultz, and Paige Stoep.

The Gallery is opening with this show this month of January. Hours are Monday through Friday from 10:00 to 4:00. A special OPENING will be Saturday, January 17th from 10:00 to 4:00, and a member of RAFA will be on hand to chat. You are also invited to attend the OPENING RECEPTION Friday, January 16th from 5:00 to 8:00.
